Ask Arbury & Arbury Postbag - 4: Arbury Underway Before 1957, Arbury Carnival Revisits The 1980s and '90s, Madonna in Campkin Road, Wompsie Comes Home...
Thanks to all that have written.
First out of the postbag today is an enquiry from Sanj:
Why does Wikipedia say work began on the Arbury in 1957? It was earlier than that because of the council houses going up in the 1954 newspaper article you published, and Arbury School opened in 1956. Good work on your site - it is a must-read for me now and has given me an interest in the district.
Hi, Sanj - and thank you! Yes, you're quite right. 'The Arbury' began springing to life in the early 1950s. We think the error stems from the Victoria Histories article on the area, which used inaccurate independent research. These things happen. The Histories make no claim to be infallible, depending as they do on various sources and are a valuable resource - but the sources listed must be noted and checked. Wikipedia can also be quite problematic in our experience, and all sources must also be checked thoroughly. The South Arbury Self Builds were underway in 1953 and the council houses were springing up by 1954 at the latest.

Did you ever hear about that cat called Wompsie? He lived in Hazelwood Close and went to live in March with his owners in the early 90s. They were keeping him in their flat to acclimatise him to the new surroundings but he got out and turned up at his old home in Arbury a month or two later.
Yes! That's amazing! Andy knew Wompsie very well and was a friend of his and his humans. He was born in Bateson Road (then part of the changeable 'Arbury Ward') in the late 1980s. Andy heard afterwards that the new residents of the house in Hazelwood Close kept him. He was obviously happy to be back in Arbury! How he found his way all the back there is a mystery, but cats can do that sort of thing, apparently. There are more things in heaven and earth...
And talking of the '80s...

I was pleased that the Arbury Carnival picked the '80s and '90s for its procession theme this year. I remember my little sis seeing a Madonna clone, a dedicated follower of Madonna chic, at the bus stop in Campkin Road in about 1986 - and insisting it was her. She got quite stroppy when my mum said it couldn't of been because Madonna wouldn't of being catching a bus in North Arbury! 'IT WAS!' said my little sis, and stamped her foot, and burst into tears. My little sis is not little now and she blushes when we tease her about that day. It's interesting to read your stuff about the Manor Farm because I couldn't imagine the Arbury being any different to what it was when I was a child before.
Thanks, Peter. The 2024 Arbury Carnival was very well attended with an estimated 5,000 people. We're very glad to hear that. By the way, a friend of Andy's had a similar experience with a Madonna 'lookey-likey' at a bus stop in Mill Road a couple of years after your sister. We doubt Madonna was catching buses there and in Arbury. But who knows! Andy saw The Fonz in Boots once. But that's another story... 😃
One of our favourite photographs from this year's Arbury Carnival as 1980s fashions return to Arbury Town Park in 2024.
